  1. Applying Upgrades

  4. The following instructions assume that you have installed Civil War
  5. to a directory C:\CIVILWAR and that you have downloaded the upgrade
  6. file called CW201_A.ZIP into a directory call C:\DOWNLOAD.  You change
  7. the appropriate part of the instructions to match your setup.

  9. Using PKZIP from the DOS prompt
  10. -------------------------------

  12.  Type in the following:
  13.    C:
  14.    CD \CIVILWAR
  15.    PKUNZIP -D -O C:\DOWNLOAD\CW201_A.ZIP

  17. Using WinZip in Windows 3.1 or Windows 95

  20.   * Start WinZip
  21.   * Click on the "Open" Icon
  22.   * Use the Open File Dialog to find the upgrade file you downloaded
  23.     and click on "Open".
  24.   * Click on the "Extract" Icon.
  25.   * Make sure that "Use Directory Names" is ticked
  26.   * Make sure that "Overwrite Existing Files" is ticked
  27.   * Use the "Directories/Drives" window to locate C:\CIVILWAR
  28.   * Click on Extract.

  30. Frequently Asked Questions and Answers about upgrading

  33. Q) Can I use my old saved games with the new version?
  34.  
  35. A) Yes... New versions of Civil War will read in saved games from old
  36.    versions, but not the other way round.

  38.    One exception, is if you are upgrading from V1.0.0, then old saved
  39.    games will not work unless you delete GAMEDATA\START.CAM from your
  40.    hard disk.

  43. Q) Which Files do I need?
  44.  
  45. A) There are 3 files to upgrade to 2.0.1, which files you need depend
  46.    on which version you are upgrading from.  You can find out which
  47.    version you already have by looking on the main menu screen of the
  48.    game.  The version number is displayed underneath the picture.
  49.  
  50.     CW201_M.ZIP  : This is needed to upgrade from the Master Player's
  51.                    Edition, or from Version 2.0.x
  52.     CW201_A.ZIP  : This is needed if you are upgrading from version 1.x.x

  54.     CW201_4M.ZIP : This is an additional file to either of the above
  55.                    files if you are trying to play the game with only
  56.            4 Megs of RAM in your machine.  However, I would
  57.            advise you to upgrade your computer instead.

  59. Q) After I updated, their doesn't seemt to be any difference to the
  60.    program, or I am getting "Illegal Sprite Number" error messages.

  62. A) You did not use the -d option with PKZip, or you did not select the
  63.    "Use Directory Names" option with WinZip.

  65.    Unless you use these options, all the files will end up in the main
  66.    Civil War directory and the program will not work properly.
